Welcome back to our latest series, Foamy Asks a Question. In each episode, this lovable purple blob of insulating foam, aptly named Foamy, will ask a question about insulation foam, which his trusty companions will help him answer! Today’s topic…the difference between open and closed cell spray foam!
[Scene opens in a messy garage. A blob of insulating foam with googly eyes—Foamy—wiggles into view.]
Foamy: Hiiii friends! I’m Foamy! I was sprayed into a wall once, and I’ve never looked back! Today I have a BIG, squishy question: “What’s the difference between open and closed cell insulating foam?” I don’t know! But I’m gonna ask my friends!
[Cut to a squeaky rubber duck named Quackers perched on a shelf.]
Foamy: Quackers! You’re full of wisdom and bath water—what do you know?
Quackers: Well, Foamy, open cell foam is like a sponge! It’s soft and light because its tiny bubbles—called cells—are open. Air gets in and out, so it’s great for filling up big spaces, like an attic. But… it’s not super water-resistant.
Foamy (wiggling): Oh! So it’s like me when I’m sleepy—fluffy and a little leaky!
[Foamy flops over to a toolbox, where a tough hammer named Clang leans.]
Foamy: Clang! Hit me with your knowledge—but not literally!
Clang: Closed cell foam’s the tough stuff, kid. Its cells are sealed shut—like tiny balloons. That makes it denser, stronger, and better at blocking moisture, so it’s great for sealing up crawlspaces and metal buildings. It doesn’t expand as much, but it adds strength to whatever it sticks to.
Foamy: Whoa! So it’s like a superhero suit for your house?
Clang: Exactly. Waterproof. Airtight. Built to last.
[Foamy bounces between them, getting more excited.]
Foamy: So open cell is squishy and a little more bulky, while closed cell is strong, thinner and water-blocking! Like a comfy pillow vs. a knight’s armor!
Quackers: That’s right! And they each have their job to do.
Foamy (beaming): That makes so much sense! Thanks, friends!
[Foamy turns to the camera.]
Foamy: Whether you’re sealing up a drafty attic or sealing down a crawlspace, the right foam makes all the difference. And now I know the difference! Hooray for learning stuff! I’m Foamy, and I’ll see you next time with another squishy question!
[He wiggles offscreen, leaving behind a tiny puff of foam.]
Foamy (offscreen): I’m stuck to the floor again! Send help!
